Split - Second timer
This Split Second Timer has been designed and developed specifically for CO2 dragsters. A sophisticated electronic timer is used to indicate the winner and register both track times.
A microcontroller and custom program delivers its accuracy to one-thousandth of a second with the capability of registering dead heats.
Pre-start or race
Before race day, check your batteries are fully charged. One 9V battery powers the finish end. The starting end is either powered by one 9V or two AA batteries.
Turn on this unit and the RED light should be visible in the longer tube (sender).
If this does not occur, check the condition of the batteries.
The sender (longer tube) is attached to the striking plate (angle iron) and is held in place using the two cable ties (included). Place it in a position with its end level with the end of the striking plate and the cut-away slot down into the corner of the angle iron, secure the cable with ties.
To attach the receiver, place a small pencil in the sender tube and draw an arc on the side of the starting gate frame. The receiver (flanged tube) can be located with its centre on the arc about 30mm away from where the striking plate hits the pins. Insert one screw. Before fixing the second screw, move the striking plate and ensure that the two tubes align perfectly at some point in the arc.
Position the box on the outside of the timber frame and attach with two screws, through the keyhole slots.
Position the box on the floor on the starter side. Tape down the leads with ducting tape so as not to foul the starting mechanism.
THE FINISH END
The timing flaps come as a pair (left / right). Assemble them to their respective locator using a phillips screwdriver. Note: the soft, blue coloured sides are to face the oncoming dragsters. Be careful not to bend the shafts.
You will notice a slight spring tension holding the flaps vertically against their respective stops.
Measure the centre of the finish gate, place the main unit in the central position and screw down. In this position the flaps should overhang the finish gate frame towards the starting end. (as above)
Adjust the flaps so they just clear the floor surface. Slightly push the flaps checking that both flaps freely move and return to their respective stops.
Connect the lead from the starting end, secure with cable ties and ensure the lead does not interfere with the finish mechanism.
TEST THE SYSTEM
Turn the unit on. After the boot sequence, the display will show
This indicates that the race is ready to be run.
If you receive the display
This indicates the lead from the starting end to the finish end is not correctly plugged in. Disconnect both ends of the lead and re-plug.
NOTE: THE UNIT WILL NOT FUNCTION IN TOTAL DARKNESS.
With the unit is ready for a race ( 00:0 displayed ), the dragsters are ready for firing. The LED's will illuminate when each time is recorded. When the race is completed (both dragsters have finished) the winning LED RED or GREEN will flash to indicate the winner, both dragster times are displayed.
To run the next race, turn the unit off, then restart.
Your unit is now ready to race.

1.TURN THE UNIT ON AND ENSURE THE TIMER IS READY TO GO - 00:0 IS ON THE DISPLAY.
2.GIVE THE SIGNAL - THE FINISH END IS READY.
3.SET THE STARTING MECHANISM ONTO ITS LATCH AND FIRE WHEN READY.
4.OBSERVE THE WINNER. RECORD BOTH TIMES BEFORE THE NEXT STEP.
5.TURN THE UNIT OFF - READY FOR THE NEXT RACE. REPEAT FROM STEP ONE.
Ensure paddles are removed from the timer during
storage. To remove the paddles, loosen the screws on the ends of the
spindle and slide the paddles out.
